![]() Not much I could really do at that point but to take the credit and warn others, since they are the only game in town I'm pretty much their hostage (at least until Starlink goes live and I drop them like a hot potato). He even apologized profusely that I had been told wrong to begin with and gave me a $50 credit on my next bill. ![]() A supervisor immediately got on the phone and finally admitted there was some "limited" throttling of Steam during times of heavy use, but it was temporary and should go away in a month. But when I told them I was going to post a Youtube video showing the difference between speeds with a VPN and without, their tune quickly changed. So I called back and basically told the customer service rep, "You lied and I have proof." First they tried to argue with me and claim I was a mistaken and it was something on my end causing it like a firewall. In fact I did several experiments, I would turn the VPN off, they would instantly drop to 56k, turn it back on right back up to full speed. Well guess what? Instantly download speeds popped right back to where they had always been. So on the advice of a friend at work I signed up for NordVPN, that way Viasat would not be able to detect I was on Steam. In some areas, Viasat offers unlimited data plans. Viasat’s plan offerings are not the same in every area some places only have plans with 5Mbps download speeds. They suggested the problem must be with Steam (which I knew was ridiculous or there would be mass riots in every Steam message board). Image 1 of 5 You can enter your zip code on Viasat’s website to get an idea of which plans are available in your area and how much they cost. But they NEVER throttled individual websites. They said absolutely not, they only throttle if the network is overloaded (usually between 9-12pm) and once you hit your data limit it you have a metered account. When the situation didn't resolve itself after a few days, I called Viasat customer service and asked them point blank if they started throttling Steam. Funny thing was that seemed to be the only site affected, I could pop over to Netflix and watch a show at 4k smooth as butter. Everything was fine until September when Steam downloads started getting real slow (and I mean REAL slow, down to 56kbs - that's kilobytes not megabytes we're talking mid 1990's dial-up speeds). In my downtime I'm also an avid gamer, so I usually get at least a couple games a month off Steam. I have one of their higher end packages and pay up the wazoo for it ($200 a month) but I really have no other option because I need the bandwidth for telework (which use to only be a couple days a week but is now full-time due to COVID). I've had Viasat for two years now, I bought a beautiful house in the middle of nowhere and realized one of the downsides of being in the middle of nowhere is there is absolutely no other option for internet.
